Finding Peace in the Digital World - Pre-class Materials

‘Gratitude’ is such a common word that you might think you already fully understand it to mean feeling thankful for someone or something. But at a deeper level, gratitude is based on our unconscious awareness of our interdependent relationships with others. It is then we can truly appreciate the value of what others have done for us. Expression of gratitude is therefore an important contemplative practice for establishing peace and harmony between the self and the world. The following video looks at the close linkage between interdependence and gratitude and their role in compassionate-centred living, so do check it out before you come to class!

‘Interbeing’ is a term coined by the late Buddhist monk and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, which goes deeper than the relational level of interdependence. It essentially means all people, things, and phenomena are interconnected at the existential level as they depend on each other to exist: You can’t be you without the world around you. Check out this video where author and public speaker Charles Eisenstein explains the meaning of interbeing.
